Toxins are powerful bacterial effectors. They can target all the key functions within the cells of our body, but until recently the DNA, our genetic code, was spared from the bacterial attack. This view has changed with the discovery of bacterial genotoxins: effectors that cause DNA damage.
My research group has contributed to characterize the effects of these toxins on cells. Intoxicated cells stop dividing and slowly die. Occasionally, intoxicated cells survive and acquire the features of tumor cells.
The main interest is to understand why bacteria have acquired these unusual effectors, with a mode of action different from all the other bacterial toxins. My research merges the fields of infection, immunology, and cancer biology, and it can help to identify bacteria that can potentially promote cancer.
Praktisk information
I can also hold discussions on vaccination, zoonosis, and cancer biology if there is any interest.
