Hej, I am Marina. For my research, I use lake mud to study how the landscape and ecosystems have changed over time. How did the landscape look when the Vikings sailed across the seas or when the mammoth roamed the arctic tundra?
Lake mud can answer these questions. At the bottom of lakes, a new layer of mud (we call it sediment) accumulates every year and preserves information just like in a history book.
In my current project, I use DNA that can be found in these sediments. It tells us which trees, mammals, and insects lived thousands of years ago and how their environment changed. This is important because it gives us a reference to compare current observations to. What do you think – which seeds did Viking kids collect in their pockets? Which insects crawled over their hands?

Ålder: 36
Familj: Two kids
Fritidsintressen: Cycling, nature, hiking
Därför forskar jag: It fascinates me how we can learn about landscape changes. Those mountains weren’t always there, those rivers will flow differently in 100 years from now…
Något från min bucketlist: Cycle around the Baltic Sea
Praktisk information
I speak and understand some Swedish (for questions, for example), but I am more comfortable giving the presentation in English.
