I am a PhD student in the broad field of Environmental Science, focusing on chemicals that end up where they shouldn’t be. I have chosen to study one particular group of chemicals: PFAS. These chemicals number in the thousands and can be found in various products, such as outdoor clothing, cookware, and cosmetics, due to their unique properties like repelling water and oil and withstanding harsh conditions. However, they can cause significant harm to the environment and human health.
My work resembles that of a detective: identifying which PFAS are used, understanding their purposes, measuring their amounts, and exploring alternatives. I primarily use analytical chemistry, analyzing samples from consumer products as well as environmental samples like seawater and freshwater. Ultimately, with my research, I hope to contribute to a more sustainable use of chemicals in our society.
