As a palaeontologist and palaeoanthropologist, I am interested in finding out about the history of life on our planet, by studying fossils.
In 2013 a remarkable discovery was made deep underground in the Rising Star Caves in South Africa. An international team and I discovered the remains of thousands of fossil bones of an extinct hominin, or ‘human ancestor’. The bones were of a new species of human unknown to science. This ancient human ventured more than 30 meters deep into these caves some 350 000 years ago – but why?
The discovery, which was the largest of its kind in history, changed our understanding of human evolution, and begs many questions about who we are as humans and where we come from. Join me as I take you through the astonishing discovery, the science, biology and fossil evidence, as we uncover the truly remarkable ancient human known today as Homo naledi.
