Amazonian monkeys, DNA, and coding

I’m a PhD student at the Museum of Natural History. Before, I worked in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest following wild monkeys, collecting their poop, and managing a remote laboratory. I’ve gotten lost in the jungle and proud to say I collected poop from around 7 species of monkeys!

Now, I work with genetic data using very, very powerful computers. First, you collect a sample (poop, blood, a leaf…) and get the DNA out of it in a lab (DNA are the tiny chains of cooking recipes in our bodies with the instructions to make you, you, a sunflower, a sunflower, and a rabbit, a rabbit).

Then, you translate the recipes into information that a computer can read – like the words in a cookbook. Finally, you use these words to learn about the organisms in the sample, where it’s from, or even if it’s related to others. I’m happy to talk about my experience with monkeys, or about my current work.

Due to PhD work commitments, some bookings might only be available through zoom.
