Heritage and the future city: the West Link

I am a PhD candidate in heritage conservation (kulturvård). In my research I study how the cultural environment is dealt with in cases of large infrastructure construction. In such situations, the new needs that prompt urban development must be met while simultaneously not compromising heritage value of existing environments. In my work, I study two projects, the West Link in Gothenburg, and the Mumbai Metro in Mumbai, and speak to public actors involved in the projects to understand how they tackle the challenge.

I would like to talk to the school students about the West Link and what I have found out so far about the various proposals of the actors. These include storytelling, using the archaeological finds excavated during construction, and various urban design programmes to ‘strengthen’ the story of the old city, as the actors negotiate the future city – as represented by the train tunnel – with heritage conservation.
