Program

09:00 – 09:30 How does spaceflight affect astronauts’ bodies?
Medverkande forskare: Stefania Giacomello, KTH

We are entering a new era of space exploration enabled by commercial spaceflights. Despite the increasing number of space missions, we still do not have a clear picture of the impact of spaceflight on the human body. In this talk, we will discuss the main hazards of space exploration, what we have learnt so far, and what researchers are trying to understand relatively to gene expression alterations in the heart and brain using a novel technique called Spatial Transcriptomics.

10:00 – 10:30 Is weight-loss surgery properly restoring insulin response?
Medverkande forskare: Carsten Daub, Karolinska Institutet/SciLifeLab

Obesity is often accompanied by reduced response to insulin, which can, in turn, develop into type-2 diabetes. Gastric bypass surgery in obese individuals can lead to weight loss and to subsequent restoration of insulin response. Looking at the fat tissue as one major insulin responding tissue, we identified the genes responding to an acute insulin challenge. We compared the insulin response of obese individuals and never obese individuals to the response after weight loss.

11:00 – 11:45 Cellular world observed with microscopy – in two parts
Medverkande forskare: Erdinc Sezgin, Karolinska Institutet/SciLifeLab, Marta Carroni, Stockholm University/SciLifeLab

In this two-part session, we will talk about the story of microscopy and what we can visualize with imaging techniques. We will give examples of applications of how these technologies enabled us to understand life by revolutionizing our understanding of the cellular cosmos. We will start with light microscopy that helped us massively to uncover cellular micro-cosmos and later talk about electron microscopy that shed unprecedented light on cellular nano-cosmos.

Part 1: Light Microscopy
Part 2: Cryogenic Electron Microscopy

14:00 – 14:30 Hidden treasure: an immunological master switch deep in our guts
Medverkande forskare: Luisa Hugerth, Karolinska Institutet/SciLifeLab

The gut microbiota has received a lot of attention in media lately, including many claims on diet. But what can the bugs in our guts actually do? In this talk we’ll go through the basics, but also show how advanced DNA sequencing technology and computational tools can help scientists find important bacteria where no-one had thought of looking.

15:00 – 15:30 Sex differences in the immune system
Medverkande forskare: Camila Rosat Consiglio, Karolinska Institutet/SciLifeLab
