I’m Lara and I’m a PhD student and works as a marine biologist in Tjärnö. I work with the most fascinating but also most inaccessible animals on our planet: deep-sea corals.
Everyone has heard of tropical corals, but corals and their relatives also thrive in deep and cold water. In my work I try to find out basic information, for example how corals reproduce and live in the deep ocean. Corals produce eggs and sperm, which they release into the water column in a synchronized spawning event that often lasts only a few days a year.
To examine this essential process, I study corals in the laboratory and look at what happens after sperm encounters an egg and further raise the resulting larvae.

Fritidsintressen: Biking, hiking, bird watching, photography and illustrations.
Därför forskar jag: Our planet is fascinating and there is still so much more to discover. As a researcher, my work days vary a lot, from sampling to coding, and I have the opportunity to use my curiosity and constantly learn new things.
